Bodker L. Arts Week of 2/10/2014

This week in Language Arts, students will learn about and begin writing a comparison essay.  We recently completed reading the book Tuck Everlasting.  We then watched the Disney version of the same story.  Students will now write about the similarities and differences they identified.  Students will write their essays at school.  They are expected to use the writing process to write and edit their  essay.   We will also have short lessons reviewing  the use of  context clues in reading to identify the meanings of unknown words.  Students should expect a short quiz on Thursday to assess their skills.

Homework
Students should be reading 30 minutes each night.

January RISE Students

Congrats to Luke, Karis, Maddy, and Emily for being selected for RISE in January for our team!

Graven LA Week of Feb. 10

Students will read "Blancaflor" from Treasures Unit 3, Week 4.  The main focus will be on finding the theme of stories, as well as similes and metaphors.  In writing students will continue to work on their Dream Job fictional narratives by including dialogue and working through the writing process.  Students will also learn about linking verbs.  The spelling words for the week follow the pattern of consonant + le syllables, like in saddle, bubble, and medal. Students should have also taken their first Reading Counts quiz of the 3rd quarter by now.  Students completed official book contracts last week for their second book choice to stay on pace for the quarter.  The second Reading Counts quiz is due by Feb. 28.  All students should read at least 30 minutes daily!

SS Week of Feb. 10

We finished the explorers last week with the Ch. 5 assessment.  This week will be spent on Time for Kids reading with Olympic discussions, learning about timelines, and beginning to study the first settlements in the New World.  I encourage students to learn about geography and culture as they watch the Olympics over the next 2 weeks.  I'll share various apps and methods to make Social Studies connections to Sochi 2014.  Let me know if you have any great connections as well!

This week for language arts, we will be covering chapters 20-23 in Sign of the Beaver.  There is a spelling list this week but the quiz will actually take place next Tuesday 2/18.  There will be a skills test Thursday and I will also be checking Treasures Practice Book work that day.

Wright Science Week of Feb. 10

We are studying electricity this week.  Be sure that you understand what conductors and insulators are and how to build a simple circuit.  You should be familiar with the concept of energy transformation and that electricity can be changed into many different forms of energy. For example, an LCD projector changes electricity into light, heat, mechanical and sound energy.

Bodker Math Week of Feb 4th

Students began this week by taking time to review there  Unit 6 Assessments.  Many students did very well and showed mastery of the skills we learned.  However, there were a few students that had difficulty with the addition and subtraction of fractions and data collection.  As a result, I decided to create a study group during recess each day this week. I will use the time to  reteach the skills that were not mastered.
I am so proud of all of the students in my fifth grade math classes. Without hesitation, your children have come each day,  missing recess, worked hard, and show determination to do well.

Our classes  have continued to move into Unit 7.  This unit will focus on parenthesis, exponents and order of operation.  Most kids really like this unit.  We did cover exponents and base 10 exponents earlier in the years.  As a result, we will quickly touch on those to review and then move onHomew to order of operation.

Students have taken vocabulary notes.   Please remind your child to review the vocabulary as those words are important to finding  success in class.

Bodker Language Arts Week of Feb. 4th

Last week students completed the class novel, Tuck Everlasting.  This week students began the week with an assessment to check for comprehension and understanding of the book.  Tuesday, we began watching the 2002 Disney version of Tuck Everlasting.  Students have been asked to keep compare the movie to the book.  They will keep a log of things that they notice are different.  Next week,  students will use the list to create a comparative essay.   We continue to  reviewing and discuss verbs.

Wright Language Arts Week of February 3rd

Sign of the Beaver is our novel study for the month and we will be reading chapters 15-20 this week.  Students will also be completing Treasures Practice Book pages this week.  Our grammar study is finding and using helping verbs and main verbs in a sentence.  The reading skill that we focus on this week is comparing and contrasting.  Be sure to keep up on the journal responses that correspond to each chapter.
